Roll Models: A Therapeutic Role Playing Game (RPG) Group for Kids Ages 10–13 in Davidson, NC

Empowering youth through collaborative storytelling and guided play

A collaboration between Young Dragon Slayers and Joey Schnople Counseling

What Are Role Playing Games (RPGs) and Why Are They Great for Kids?

Role Playing Games (RPGs) are interactive storytelling experiences where players take on the role of a character in a shared fictional world. Together, the group imagines challenges, solves problems, and makes decisions that shape the narrative.

Popular RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and Kids on Bikes foster creativity, cooperation, and resilience. In positive supervised settings—such as libraries or schools—RPGs help kids build social confidence and enjoy collaborative play.

In a therapeutic RPG group, the structure deepens: licensed clinicians and trained game masters develop goals based on intake feedback. Each session ends with a short guided debrief, helping players reflect on what they felt, learned, and practiced—turning in-game experience into real-world growth.

How Therapeutic Role Playing Games Help Kids Build Social and Emotional Skills

  • Social Skills & Emotional Awareness – Perspective-taking, expressing emotions, and working together as a team.
  • Executive Functioning & Focus – Practicing planning, attention, working memory, and impulse control in each encounter.
  • Confidence & Safe Risk-Taking – Trying on roles and solving problems lets kids step into empowered versions of themselves.
  • Creative Play & Self-Expression – A supportive group setting where imagination and emotional honesty are celebrated.
