More about Joey

Here are a few of the highlights:

I have an undergrad in Philosophy and Modern Languages, an MBA, and I worked in education for over twenty years before becoming a counselor.

I began working as a mental health counselor and family therapist because I was fascinated by my own growth from individual and couple’s therapy. I hoped to bring an approach that would work well for people seeking help.

I am an RYT-200 Registered Yoga Teacher, trained by Sam Leonard ERYT500, CIAYT of Davidson Yoga Therapy. My yoga training focused on the breath and the mind, with an awareness of trauma and therapeutic results, and it informs my approach to practicing therapy as well.

I began a meditation practice at the Zen Mountain Monastery in Kingston, NY, almost 10 years ago. As I continue my practice, I find that slowing down is almost always a good idea when approaching challenges.

I am a student of applying mindful awareness to daily life, in order to make decisions in a clear and calm way. Dr. Judson Brewer’s work on Habit Loops is excellent in this regard.

The most important aspect of therapy is trust. A client trusts that they can open up about the important topics of their lives without judgment, or ridicule, or condescension. A client trusts that they can have an open conversation with someone who recognizes that they are not “broken”, and that they have valuable ideas and insights. A pair of clients trust that I will be fair and objective. I work to honor this trust so that you can begin a process of growth, or changing, or healing, or any other area where you are stuck.

This is challenging work. Being one-size-fits-all doesn’t help. I believe that everyone has a different style, and I hope to match that in a way that helps you to grow.

It can be hard to seek help. We may believe our problems are too big, or too small, or not-really-a-problem-but-my-partner…. We may feel nervous, or ridiculous, or hopeless.

I get that. I can help. Call today.
