Couples Therapy

Learn how to Be a Team

Do you feel like you are having the same arguments over, and over, and...over...? Things aren't what they used to be, or what you had hoped for? Whether a couple or a family, “traditional” or not, at any age and life stage, our time together will guide and inspire you to better understand yourself, your loved ones, and the dynamics that are unique to your family or partnership.

Who needs Couples Therapy?

Lots of people. Sometimes folks are in crisis because something JUST HAPPENED, sometimes there are issues that have been simmering for a while, sometimes people want to navigate a life change or simply strengthen their bond. There can be specific issue or something as broad as “communication”. No one has to be the bad guy, and no one is ever all wrong all the time.

What are common topics for Couples Therapy?

As far as the eye can see…..There are many, and no topics are out of bounds. Living with another human is hard. No doubt about it. The tools we bring to this endeavor are largely inherited from our own family of origin. There is no manual for this, and your parents didn’t have one either. For that reason alone, we bring a host of patterns and behaviors to our relationships that may not be serving us well. Half the time we don’t even realize it. I like to explore the reasons why the patterns form, how anger and fear and overwhelm actually work, how to be open to other points of view, how to live with some of the little things that make you crazy, the list goes on.

I saw you offer ADHD Therapy - do you offer ADHD couples therapy?

Family systems are built on trust and consistency, which can be an issue when one or both partners has trouble following through or keeping track of time. Whether one or both of you, or others in your family have ADHD or ASD, there are ripple effects that can sow seeds of distrust and misunderstanding. We work through a through understanding of how these neurotypes affect relationships, how to manage boundaries and accountability, and how to maintain healthy functioning and communication.

Do you only see married couples?

Nope. Partnered, married, even navigating separation. Marriage and Family Therapy is, at its essence, about how each of the parts of the relationship work together. It is less about “Jack needs to be fixed”, and more about “Jack and Diane need to each find a way to improve their interactions.” I also work with couples who are separating and wanting to be sure they handle it well for their children. We cover any aspect of the relationship and are LGBTQ friendly.
